Scout Camping Competition - 17-05-2010
Camp Competition
This years District Camp Competition took place on 15 & 16th May. The venue this year was Avondyke Scout Training Centre in Stonehouse. Weather over the weekend was in the main part kind, only a shower as we were striking camp on Sunday afternoon. But as always the good old Scottish midge made its presence known!
There were 6 patrols from across the District and all concerned appeared to have an enjoyable experience as well as learning some new skills.
As always the competition is well supported by leaders (thanks go to Hugh who comes along and cooks excellent fare for the leaders; thus allowing us to concentrate on the competition) and Explorer Scouts who come along and help with bases and marking of skills displayed by our Scouts. Skill range is wide and varied - from those who routinely camp to those who have never been involved in this type of competition before. But each and every one tried their hardest and became more proficient over the period of the camp. The camp only lasts one weekend but some of the skills learned for the camp, and indeed at the camp, will remain with the Scouts and be useful as they progress through their Scout and day to day life; the cooking; kitchen hygiene and organisational skills are useful in many ways!
The campfire is for most the highlight of any camp and as always a variety of skits were performed to entertain us in the evening.
Congratulations to all who took part. But special congratulations go to 9th Airdrie on winning the competition and best wishes to them as they now progress on to the National Camp Competition which takes place at Fordell Firs in June.
